Our community is built on the spirit of resilience—each of us faces our own unique challenges, and through shared experience and support, we grow stronger together. In our everyday lives, whether in moments of personal hardship or while fighting for justice in our legal system, we learn that every wave of adversity carries the opportunity for renewal. This message is especially important now, as many of us continue to navigate complex personal journeys and systemic obstacles.
“When the tide is high, you just get low.
Hold your breath and take it slow.
Yes, I might get wet, I might get thrown;
but I’ll resurface all on my own.
Just go with the tide.
I’ll be alright.”
I was honored to welcome my triple rainbow baby into this world last year. I had the privilege of having a doula for my birth who was an absolute blessing as my advocate through my healing and recovery process. My birth story was a testimony of remarkable fortitude, and it brought me encouragement and affirmation. I truly hope it does the same for you as you find yourself interested in pursuing a legal career.
As my son was making his entrance into this world, he was fighting to breathe as an umbilical cord wrapped around his neck and cut off his circulation. In life you have the choice to push through complications and barriers or be still. In the moments when I needed to give all my strength, I had people beside me—my doula, the labor and delivery nurses, and even an inspiring playlist—ready to remind me what I needed to make it through.

After my son was born, I was shortly thereafter informed of some of the complications that occurred. The process was described to me as ocean waves ebbing and flowing with various highs and lows. As the fetal monitor demonstrated its “highest” contraction/pain point, I had to give my baby all the strength and fight that I had left [push through]. When the pain point/wave subsided, it was time to rest [be still] and prepare to fight the next wave that would come. I did everything the “right way,” listening to what my body needed throughout the process and following the careful instructions given to me by my birth team.
However, my son was still born with a complication that would require gentle care. Such an emergency (that only occurs in less than 5 percent of births) caused my son to be born with broken bones in his arm. I was assured that children come into this world with all the means to heal on their own. How comforting it was to know we are BORN resilient. A month later, my son was fully healed from his injury at birth. Four months later, you would never be able to tell what he went through.
Correspondingly, this fellowship has been so vital to my growth and has given me resources and a community that has made all the difference in my pursuit as an aspiring LawyHER.
My Journey: Delayed but Not Denied
There were moments when my journey felt delayed—when the challenges of motherhood and the demands of forging a legal career seemed overwhelming.
