Big-Picture Feedback
1. Framing and Structure
The essay is written as a chronological “play-by-play” of your journey. While this explains how you got here, a personal statement is most compelling when it is framed around a central theme that reflects why you want to pursue law and what motivates you today.
The strongest parts of your essay—your experience in the Mass Communication Law & Ethics class and the SOS program—are buried in the middle or end. Those should be front and center.
2. What to Trim or Reframe
The section about your parents’ expectations and résumé-building activities could be significantly shortened. Right now it suggests law was a “default” path rather than something you actively chose. Law schools want to see intentionality, not obligation.
Instead of explaining every step, zoom in on 2–3 defining experiences and go deeper into what they taught you about law and advocacy.
3. Depth of Reflection
You describe your experiences well, but the reflection is thin. Ask yourself after each example:
-
What did I learn about justice, law, or advocacy from this moment?
-
What did it show me about the kind of lawyer I want to be?
Example: In your SOS section, you describe the program but don’t share your personal insight. What did those conversations with youth teach you about the law’s role in prevention, second chances, or community guidance?
4. Theme and Voice
The essay currently has two strong but disconnected strands:
-
Law and media/communication (Mass Comm minor)
-
Law as a tool for justice and rehabilitation (SOS program)
These strands need to be tied together into one cohesive narrative.
Three Possible Framing Options
Option 1: “Voice and Advocacy” Theme (Recommended)
Anchor the essay in your discovery of Mass Communication Law & Ethics as your “aha” moment. Frame yourself as someone passionate about the laws that protect voices, whether that’s journalists or marginalized youth. Then tie in the SOS program as a real-world example of law amplifying unheard voices.
Option 2: “Justice Beyond Punishment” Theme
Lead with the SOS program and alternatives to incarceration. Show how that shifted your idea of justice from punishment to prevention and advocacy. Then weave in Mass Communication Law as an academic complement — showing your intellectual curiosity about how law regulates information and rights.
Option 3: “Breaking from Expectations” Theme
Start with the pressure of your parents’ expectations (Doctor/Lawyer/Engineer) but pivot quickly to how you forged your own path. Mass Communication becomes the turning point where you discovered your authentic “why law.” SOS then strengthens this by showing you that you want to advocate not because you “should,” but because you’ve seen the law’s power to change lives.
Draft Outline for Option 1 (Voice and Advocacy Theme)
-
Intro/Hook: Mass Communication Law & Ethics class midterm applying Philadelphia Newspapers v. Hepps. Show how that moment gave you clarity: law can protect voices and shape how stories are told.
-
Body Paragraph 1: Academic Discovery: How studying mass communication revealed the intersections of law, media, and advocacy.
-
Body Paragraph 2: Real-World Application: Internship at the Eastern District of New York. Describe the SOS program and the youth you observed. Reflect: what did this teach you about law’s potential to provide second chances?
-
Body Paragraph 3: The Unifying Thread: Tie together your two strands: law as a tool for amplifying unheard voices.
-
Conclusion: Revisit the idea of “voice.” You started by discovering how law protects expression and ended by seeing how law can restore it to those silenced by circumstance. State your commitment to becoming a lawyer who advocates for those voices in courtrooms and communities.
Next Steps for You
-
Choose one of the three framing options above and commit to that as your central theme.
-
Reorder your essay so the “aha” moment is near the beginning.
-
Trim background details about parents’ expectations so they don’t overshadow your genuine motivation.
-
Add 2–3 sentences of reflection in the SOS section (or whichever real-world experience you highlight) that clearly state what you learned about justice and the role of law.
-
End with a conclusion that ties everything back to your chosen theme and shows how law school is the natural next step.
